Difference between Dashboard and Scorecard Statistics

Dashboards can be broader in scope, but still cover the same statistics that have been groomed for the balanced scorecard. Typically a dashboard will cover a functional area (i.e. stats on a manufacturing floor or performance stats for a department) to provide a quick snapshot into performance and trending. Scorecards are measurements that have been agreed upon as performance indicators which are important to CEO level management and essentially perform a similar function as the dashboards, but might not be the only stats used to determine how well the area being measured is doing.

Using Group Level Permissions instead of User Level

For ease of catalog administration, only assign permissions at a group level (as opposed to an individual user level) for objects in the web catalog (i.e. reports, pages, dashboards, prompts, etc.). Adding individual users to these elements makes maintenance difficult and costly. Also, you will save yourself many hours of “hunting and pecking” to determine who has access to what.

Implementing Simple Column-Level Security

Some columns, such as Social Security Number (SSN), may contain sensitive information that should only be displayed to certain Users or Groups. A simple way to restrict the visibility of this data is to use column-level security. All you need to do is modify the Permissions for a given presentation column in the repository. By default, the Everyone group will have read access; you must uncheck this check box, and then explicitly grant access (check the boxes) only to the appropriate groups. Now let’s say that Basic_User does not have permission to view the SSN column, but Super_User does. If there is a Dashboard or Report that contains the SSN column, the Super_User will be able to run the report and see the SSN data, but the Basic_User will not even be able to run the report; the report will produce an error like this:
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 27005] Unresolved column: "Employees"."SSN". (HY000)

For the Basic_User, OBIEE will error out, because the SSN column will not be “recognized”. Here’s the trick to fix this: in the NQSConfig.ini file change the parameter PROJECT_INACCESSIBLE_COLUMN_AS_NULL which is under the security section.

By default it is set to No. Instead, set the value to yes. Then stop and restart the BI Server and Presentation Server Services. Now, when Basic_User runs this same report containing SSN, the report will run correctly, but the SSN column will not be displayed at all.

Can you trust your intelligence?

It happens all to often: A sales and marketing team gathers for their weekly status meeting and each person is armed with the same report showing different results. A debate ensues as to whose report has the accurate numbers. Attentions are diverted, time is wasted and productivity is lost.

How strongly can you trust your information intelligence? What should you do when your system becomes more of a liability than an asset?

There is one basic truth I know about information systems: When it comes to number crunching, the reports you build are only as intelligent as the data you input and the filters you create to organize it. When installing a CRM system, I try to do the following at a minimum:

1) Designate a system owner and set user permission levels for accessing and editing data.

2) Determine what intelligence needs reported to management.

3) Determine what data fields are needed to report on that create this intelligence.

4) Create your data fields in the proper, reportable format (i.e. if it’s a number, create a numeric field, not a text field).

5) Define your report filters based on the fields needed to report the intelligence.

6) Build standard report templates that everyone has access to but cannot change without consent from the system owner.

7) Communicate to staff using the system the importance of entering good quality data. Set required fields as needed.
